Maine Health Insurance

Maine’s health status

Maine health insurance

Maine is one of the healthiest states to live, according to the United Health Foundation and its America’s Health Rankings. Maine is 9th in the ranking of the healthiest states, and despite dropping two spots from 2007’s rank (when it was ranked 7th in the nation), Maine is still in the top ten, and great, healthy state. Maine has been a part of the top ten states of the country when it comes to healthiness, and there are some key factors supporting this: Maine has the lowest Violent Crime rate in the Country, with only 118 offenses per 100,000 people within the state. Also, despite Maine’s poor public funding (only $51 per person), the state has one of the lowest percentages of citizens lacking Health Insurance Coverage (only 9% of the people in Maine do not have Health Insurance).

The state dropped two spots in the national health ranking this year. Some issues that have caused Maine to be consider not as healthy as it was in 2007, are the increase in the prevalence of obesity (up to 25.2% of the population, it was 23.1% in 2007), and the increase of the percentage of children in poverty (up from 13.2% to 14.4% of persons under age 18). Cardiovascular-related deaths, Infant Mortality rates and premature death percentages have risen slightly, and need to be looked upon to stop the negative tendencies. Despite dropping slightly, Maine’s Immunization coverage percentage is still low, with only 77.6 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations. Cancer-related deaths are also high (at 212.2 deaths per 100,000 population, it’s the seventh worst state in America), but also lowering. If Maine can take into action plans to control this health issues, the state have an even better status when it comes to health.

When it comes to Health Insurance, although Maine is could do with better public funding, only 9% of the population in Maine is still lacking basic Health Insurance, which is one of the best percentages in the US. This is a key factor in Maine’s overall improvement when it comes to health, as they have been reducing the percentage of people with no health insurance consistently for the past five years. It doesn’t hurt either that the number of primary care physicians is going up as well, and the rate of preventable hospitalizations and geographic disparity is going down. Maine has been working hard to make its health system accessible to everyone, and this is a thing they have definitely been doing right.

There are few places above Maine when it comes to health. With great access to health care and health insurance, and a peaceful lifestyle, the people in Maine has excellent health.
