New York Health Insurance

New York’s health status

New York health insurance

New York is, according to America’s Health Rankings, the 25th state in the country when it comes to health, the absolute middle position. Up a spot from 2007’s rank. In the past year, the high school graduation rate increased from 60.9 percent to 65.3 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years. Although the percentage is still low, there is a big improvement. Also, since 1990, the violent crime rate decreased from 1,007 to 414 offenses per 100,000 population. The state has also the lowest percentage of geographical disparity, with only 7.4% of geographical disparity within the state, and is the third state with the best rate of ready primary care access, with 170.3 primary care physicians per 100,000 population.

Other great features of this state are the high immunization coverage (the 9th best in the nation, with 83.0% of kids ages 19 - 35 months receiving complete immunizations), a low occupational fatalities rate (4.2 deaths per 100,000 workers, 8th in the nation), and a low rate of cancer deaths at 182.2 deaths per 100,000 population. Also decreasing this year, the cardiovascular related deaths, the infant mortality rate, and the premature death rate, which are excellent indicators.

Some of the challenges for this state include a high incidence of infectious disease at 39.3 cases per 100,000 population, the worst incidence in the nation, a low high school graduation rate with 65.3 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years (though improving from last year, it’s still low) and a high percentage of children in poverty at 20.4 percent of persons under age 18. New York ranks lower for health determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness may decline over time.

New York is at a great spot when it comes to health, with the best rankings and percentages in the past twenty years. With a very strong public funding ($110 per person), one of the best immunization coverage percentages in the country, and an excellent ready primary care system, New York is working things in its favor. Although the percentage of the population lacking Health Insurance has risen slightly as compared to last year, it’s still on the low side, with 13.6% of New Yorkers lacking Health Insurance Coverage. New York has great potential for improvement.

New York health insurance information

In New York, 86.4% of the citizens have Health Insurance. The strong government funding makes this percentage good when compared to the rest in the nation, which means that New York has worked hard towards offering an accessible health plan to its citizens, with only 13.6 % of the population in New York having no Health Insurance, a percentage that seems to be increasing. Still, things could improve a bit more if this percentage can be lowered. The percentage of employers offering health insurance to employees is good, with 60.1% percent of employers offering health Insurance plans, and this percentage has been going up as well since 2003. About 76.4% of workers take the Health Insurance plans offered by their employers.

With great public health funding in New York, the state has now one of the best rates of ready primary care physicians for the population in the country, with 170.3 physicians per 100,000 population. New York’s health care system could be in a better position within the country if it works towards being more accessible, and efficient. The percentage of the New York population that could get medical care when needed is 89.4%. The patients served by FQHCs as a percent of population under 200% FPL stands at 18.5%.
